Disney Comics

The dream of Tralla La, hidden among the Himalayan mountains, remains a watershed in the history of Disney comics (Carl Barks, “Tralla La,” Uncle Scrooge 6, Dell Comics, June 1954). The story absorbs the literary myth of Shangri-La and defines a historical-geographical space of Tibet which, like Hilton’s novel, would serve as a touchstone for subsequent representations. Side projects inspired by the Duck universe — indexes, reading lists, and small data experiments — used to examine how Asia, and in particular the Himalayan region, has been represented in the works of Carl Barks and other authors, and how such narratives shape broader cultural imaginaries.
